The Brain; Not the Body
Social media has evolved over the past few years and has considerably altered our ways of life. Social media is built on the idea of how people know and interact with each other; it gives people the power to share, making the world more open and connected with each other. Social networking has a vital influence on our live as it helps a lot in every field of life such as political field, economic field and educational field. However as much as there are lots of benefits that are attainable from the use of social media, its negative imprints on the academic activities of many scholars cannot be contested.
Take a look at the scenario below of a student in the higher institution:
She goes to the study desk very determined, opens the book, reads first, second, third and fourth pages, readjusts, brings out phone, reads fourth page again, turns on data connection, turns to page 5, and hears notification sounds.
Grabs phone, unlocks it, clicks on WhatsApp message, smiles, and types. Opens Facebook, scrolls, scrolls some more, smiles, hits like, scrolls, hits like, and comments. Opens Instagram, double clicks, scrolls, sighs, scrolls, takes a selfie, deletes it, takes another, smiles, and uploads same.
Suddenly remembers book, feels guilty, and reads fifth page again. Instagram comment notification enters, grabs phone, smiles, replies comments, checks time, sighs, and reads page 5. Call comes in; "Guy/Babe I dey jack…." Sighs, flips pages to end of chapter, weighs the volume, and checks time. Reads page 6, hears Facebook chat notification, replies chat, looks around, stretches self, sighs, sighs again, and closes books. (Resolves within) …tonight I will destroy this course…. Goes home. This process goes on repeatedly till examination comes in, she goes in for the examination and fails course. She piles the blames on the 'hash lecturer' who she claims 'does not like' her look or 'is jealous of' her. This is typically one of the various malfunctioning process of the human brain as occasioned by the social media.
The flaw and weak foundation most time starts from the parents whose interests lie on the physical beauty of the neonate. They pay much attention to the face structure, the complexion, the height, the weight and the general physique of the child. This continues forever as little or no attention is paid to the mental faculty.
The parents pay any price to clear any form of blemish they perceive on their children as they procure expensive creams and other medical substances to clean and sustain a fresh looking and glowing skin, thus promotes a healthy body. As they spend money on all this, most parents ignore and never take into cognisance the most important human component – the brain of the child – that equally requires much attention at the developmental stage.
A hidden fact from many parents is that, the brain of the child equally requires some nutrients and vitamins to grow, develop and be effective as much as other body parts that they give adequate attention. The brain requires certain meals and supplements for proper and maxima functioning. Most parents fail at this level.
Some of the brain foods are: avocados, blueberries, coconut oil, dark chocolate, egg yolks, extra virgin olive oil, egg yolks, green leafy vegetables, turmeric, and walnuts. The absence of these and their corresponding vitamins may spell doom for the brain in the likeness of the deficiencies such as kwashiorkor or malnutrition that can be physically seen in the body.
There is the need for parents to guide, mold and nurture the brain as we do to the other components of the body.
