A Peek into the U.S Political Landscape

The Republican and Democrat are the two main parties that dominate the United States’ political landscape. Many people outside the U.S, especially here in Nigeria have little or no understanding of what the two parties stand for, and thus makes it difficult for them to pick a side.

Here are some basic disparities that will give you an insight into the U.S politics. Firstly, I would like to classify the two parties into categories; Democrats as Liberals and Republicans as Conservatives. Now let’s look at their stands on the issues below to see if each fits into the stated categories.

Social Issues: The Republicans oppose same sex marriage and abortion. To them, marriage should be between a man and a woman and abortion is illegal in all cases, while the Democrats tend to be more “progressive” in their views which favours abortion and same sex marriage

Immigration/Border: While Republicans favour a tighter border, by embracing Donald Trump’s call for raising a wall between U.S and Mexico and also his consideration to deport about 11 million undocumented immigrants, the democrats oppose the idea and advocate a path to citizenship for these immigrants

Tax Policy: The Democrats believe there should only be cuts for middle or low income families, while Republicans favour tax cuts for everyone, both corporations, regardless of how rich or poor you are!

Foreign Policy: Now regardless of how you may feel about America’s interest and habit of involvement in other countries affair, you must note that both parties support the idea. Both parties agree that sending aides to other countries to displace regimes that are labelled “detrimental” to their own people is a
good thing. However, they disagree on the nature of the involvement. While Republicans support full military effort, including manpower, the Democrats favour targeted air strikes and limited manpower involvement.

Labour: While Republicans tend to oppose the increase of the minimum wage, citing the need for business to keep costs low so that they can prosper and all Americans can have access to products and services, the Democrats favour increasing the minimum wage so that Americans may have more money to purchase goods.

Now you understand the reason behind the earlier classifications. I hope these few pointers have broadened your conception of U.S politics.
