The prevalence of the deadly disease hepatitis in Nigeria is becoming alarming. In fact, doctors have called on the federal government to declared emergency on the disease. Nigeria has one of the highest prevalence of hepatitis B infections in the world. No fewer than 20 million Nigerians are living with the disease with about 30percent unaware of their status and not taking appropriate measures according to a report by the federal government.

Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver. It's commonly caused by a viral infection, but there are other possible causes of hepatitis. These include autoimmune hepatitis and hepatitis that occurs as a secondary result of medications, drugs, toxins, and alcohol.

There are 5 types of viral hepatitis, namely hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. Different viruses are responsible for each type.

According to a specialist from the Lagos State University, Dr Olufunmilayo Lesi, hepatitis B is very common in Nigeria. In fact, it is the most common type of the disease in the country.

The disease is three times more infectious than HIV/AIDS, in fact it has killed more Nigerians than diabetes and HIV/AIDS put together - scary!
The disease leads to liver failures, cancer and untimely death in infected persons. It is mostly transmitted through contact with infectious body fluids, such as blood, having sex with infected person or sharing razors blade and other objects with an infected person.

To prevent hepatitis, personal hygiene is one key way. Nigerians are expected to maintain personal hygiene, it is very important. Also, do not share needles or razor blades, do not use someone else's tooth brush, and do not touch spilled blood. The use of vaccines is also an important key to preventing hepatitis.

Do you know your status? Nigerians are advised, you in particular, I mean you specifically are advised to go for screening and check ups. Know your status today! Stay healthy because health is wealth.
