Garden Egg is believed to be a native of the Indian subcontinent. The fruit is, however, cultivated and consumed worldwide. It comes in different varieties. This unique vegetable is also called by different names in different communities. The Americans Call it Eggplant. The Hausa people in Northern Nigeria call it Gauta. The Indians say this magic fruit is "the King" of all vegetables. And believe me, it is a King with no opposition.
This King of vegetables stores several health maintaining elements. Eggplant contains significant quantities of vitamins C, k, B6, among other vitamins. It also stores significant quantities of calcium, iron, phosphorus, manganese and other minerals. Gauta is a good source of dietary fiber. And it is believed to be capable of supplying the body with antioxidants; the anti ageing agents.
This vitamins rich fruit is, therefore, very good for health. The iron content makes it good for blood formation. It is believed to be good for the anemic and the hypertensive. Like most of the good things in life, this health enhancing fruit has its negative effects. According to the Indian Central Food Research Institute, some people can develop allergic reactions towards the consumption of this fruit. This reactions, according to the institute, may include swollen throat, rashes, nausea and itching. It is also reported by The New England Journal of Medicine in 1993, that Garden Egg contains nicotine. This is, however, countered by a report in the New York Times.(read more). This fruit can be consumed fresh. It can also be prepared into a soup. The 'King of vegetables' can also be served with a variety of dishes. If you dont like the bitter taste of this fruit, you can cut it open and suck in a worm water to which salt has been added. In thirty minutes, you have the bitterness significantly reduced.
