THE LOST SPIRIT OF ALUTA

“Aluta Continua, Victoria Acerta (struggle continues, victoria is certain).” This seems to be the motto of many student unions. Not only does it form their slogan, it also, is the main engine that drove students to come together under an umbrella to pursue a common course. Many great leaders started from such associations before going to take greater roles and responsibilities.
Student unions are products of great thoughts, inspired by the spirit of unity and the desire to see that students’ welfare is cared for. They were established in various departments and institutions of higher learning to promote unity, orderliness and smooth relationship between students, staff, school authorities and the state or federal government.
It is so unfortunate today, that these goals have been defeated. Student unions have now been infiltrated by persons who do not have qualities of leadership. They come into power just to gain popularity and enjoy the peanuts students are charged as association dues. This is improper. You find these incompetent leaders embezzling fund and doing nothing to bring development. They come and go without making impact.
Leadership is service. If you want to lead, you must be ready to serve. This is what every student who aspires to be a leader must imbibe. In my opinion, President Muhammadu Buhari's fightagainst corrupt leaders should come down to higher institutions’ associations. This is because many corrupt leaders started there many are still there. They win elections through manipulations and certain sentiments and go to the outside world to present themselves as experienced leaders. Experience should go with good records of achievement. Any stained experience should be given another name and should not be used to deceive the masses.
Our student unions would be very effective if we remove all biases, elect good leaders, and play a watch-dog role to ensure that they deliver their campaign promises. When we vote our friends and associates without considering competence and integrity, we are voting in underdevelopment and stagnation. So, as students, we must start changing our country by voting-in good leaders into associations in our various campuses. In that way, we can bring the change we need, and also be the change we want.
