JUNGLE JUSTICE: WHAT SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT IT

This issue has been disturbing and this time I must speak out loud. In the recent past, a number of unlawful actions and jungle justices have been carried out. One of these acts is the setting ablaze of three suspected cultists in Lagos. According to a report on Pulse TV, a popular comedian, known as MC Think Twice who was one of the three set ablaze was innocently passing-by after his car had broken down.

If you have a human heart, it would surely be broken when you see how the human body is burnt or lynched in the name of Jungle justice. Recently, a boy was poured petrol on and was set ablaze too in Enugu because he left a shop and on account of his living, a mobile handset was stolen.

This menace has pervaded Nigeria especially and is really calling for a more urgent attention from the government and stakeholders. Though not all the time does it get the attention of the mass media.
Many of those who perpetrate this dastard act claim to be doing so because they believe the victim is guilty of the offence and  needs to be used as an example to deter others from engaging in that. In most cases most of those who suffer from this are accused of stealing.
However, since Nigeria, is not a lawless society, there is a need to give every accused person a right to fair hearing in the court or law enforcement agencies before condemning them if found guilty.
One touching thing about this is that many have been wrongly accused and killed without proper investigation even when they are innocent of the offence. By the time the truth is discovered the irreparable damage had been done.
No matter the gravity of the offence, no law has given any individual the right to take another’s life or inflict injuries on them in the name of justice. If anyone is caught stealing or engaging in any crime, he or she should be handed over to the proper authorities.
Police should bring to book all those caught engaging in jungle justice and make sure that all the people caught in criminal act by the public and handed over to them are made to face the full wrath of the law.
