As a
graduate of mass communication, you are prepared for a lot of things in life. A
communication degree as you may expect is all about learning how to communicate
information effectively. Good communication is essential in just about every
industry especially in this modern world of complex technologies and saturated
market.
In a country
like Nigeria, when a person hears that you are a student or graduate of mass
communication, they immediately assume that you want to be a journalist.
Journalism as a career is very interesting and lucrative especially when you
consider precision
journalism and entrepreneurial
journalism but there is always room for diversification. There is so much
more that you can do with a degree in mass communication.
Mass
communication prepares you for a wide range of careers. While many
communication graduates choose to work in mass media, for example film, music,
television, journalism,
public relations and advertising, others find success in a variety of
occupations. These occupations or areas include;
Communication
careers in Business: With communication playing such a key role in any
business or organization, a communications degree is a great way to enter the
business world. With training and experience, you could move up the ladder in
the business world.
Communication
careers in Human Resources: A key department of any large business, human
resources is vital for developing and maintaining worker ethics, performance
and motivation. Your role as a communications graduate is likely to be in
providing the right information at the right time to the right people within
the company. You may be involved in recruiting new staff, raising awareness
about training or professional development programs, or ensuring company
guidelines and regulations are clearly communicated.
Communication
careers in Law: Although most people entering the legal industry do so with
a postgraduate qualification or specialized law degree, communications
graduates may be interested in pursuing administrative and organizational
roles. An undergraduate communications degree could also be a great starting
point from which to apply to law school. However, if you do not wish to gain
further qualifications there is a limit to your advancement in this industry,
due to the requirements for roles such as a solicitor or barrister.
These are
just a few of the possible areas a communication graduate can delve into. With
a degree in mass communication at an undergraduate level, you can decide to
specialize in a particular field of interest at postgraduate level ranging from
health communication to digital marketing. Don't limit yourself, diversify and
use the skills you have learnt.
